eLwazi-ODSP/DS-I Africa Train-the-Trainer Workshop

Overview

The eLwazi-ODSP/DS-I Africa consortium will host an in-person Train-the-Trainer workshop in Cape Town from 9 to 13 December 2024, 9 am-5 pm (CAT, GMT+2). It will be held in English and it will be offered FREE of charge. This "train-the-trainer" workshop is intended for anyone in the DS-I Africa consortium who wishes to teach Data Science-related subjects in universities as part of degree programs or short, specialized courses. The workshop will be hands-on and best suited to those delivering data science training in the coming months, i.e., the current DS-I training grantees.

During this workshop, we hope to provide participants with the necessary skills to use and implement the eLwazi Training Workflow. The workshop will teach participants how to build focused, competency-based training curricula, as well as how to set up and manage computational environments for training, including best practices for dispersed training.

Intended Audience

This is a closed workshop aimed at DS-I Africa, NGS-Academy, and EDCTP training projects and staff across the network who will be delivering data science training. Best suited to those who are new to training but would be useful for experienced trainers who have never received any formal educational training. Preference will be given to members in need of support/training, designing/implementing training – either short or long-term, degree and non-degree programmes, based in Africa, Need to select a module to work on throughout the training.

Prerequisites

  • Little or some training experience
  • Comfortable with basic computational and cloud computing concepts e.g. understands what a server, compute node, SSH, etc.
  • Comfortable with the command line - able to write basic scripts.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Develop targeted learning objectives and outcomes tailored to specific data science competencies
  • Design competency-based training curricula
  • Employ diverse instructional strategies to deliver data science training that is both effective and engaging
  • Understand how to define computational requirements for data science training
  • Apply and promote best practices for effectively managing resources in both in-person and online/distributed training environments
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training and adapt them based on feedback
  • Understand how to develop sustainability strategies for data science training

Limitations

This workshop will only cover some foundational educational theory and assumes all participants have at least some experience within the training space. This workshop will also not cover any major IT or computational theory/background and will assume all participants have intermediate-advanced computational skills. This workshop will not make provision for ongoing support/training across any of the tools covered though additional training may be requested from the eLwazi team. All participants may use the components of the workshop they feel are useful at their discretion and accord.
